Harry Potter Pajamas

Welcome back readers! This week I’m bringing you a fun project that can be made for the whole family - pajamas! Pajamas are a great way to use up fun novelty fabrics that you may not otherwise have a purpose for, and are great for beginners because there is less pressure for them to turn out perfectly. Who is going to know?!

In my case, pajamas are usually a way for me use my stash of Harry Potter fabric. I always HAVE to have these prints, but never know what I’m going to do with them. This time around I had some high quality 100% cotton fabric with a Hogwarts Express themed print. So fun!

This fabric is still available from fabric.com.

I love using non-stretch cotton for pajamas because they’ll last a long time, and somehow manage to stay cool in summer and warm in winter. Kind of like a great pair of bedsheets, you know what I mean?

I used the pattern below to make a two piece set with a button up top, but you could also just make pajama bottoms with an elastic waist for a simpler project. I used Simplicity 3971 because I already owned this one and had it cut to my size, but there are countless pajama patterns out there that are all very similar to this one.

Here are some other fun fabrics I’ve transformed into pajamas in the past, using this same pattern.

In addition to the cotton, I had to use a medium weight interfacing to reinforce the front facing panels of the pajama top, and its collar.

I had to make button holes on the shirt front as well, and I did so using my free Button Hole Tutorial.

For the shorts I did a simple elastic waist. Let me know here if you would like to see an elastic waist tutorial from me.

The final pajama set turned out great, and they are so comfy!

Not only is this a great project for age group, but homemade pajamas make great gifts as well. You can customize the prints for the people’s specific interests, or make a whole matching set for a family at Christmas.

Either way I hope this post has inspired you to give pajamas a try. It’s a fun project that very little pressure involved if they don’t come out perfectly. I’d love to see what fun prints you would go for!

Until next time, happy sewing!

~Amanda
